New York Governor Kathy Hochul is urging Congress to pass a national assault weapons ban following the Manhattan office shooting that left four people dead, including NYPD officer Didarul Islam.
In a statement Tuesday morning, Hochul confirmed the suspect used an AR-15-style rifle, a weapon frequently tied to mass shootings. She condemned the violence as a “horrific act” and said New York’s strong gun laws are not enough when weapons can be brought in from other states.

Because a gunman from a state with weak gun laws brought an AR-15 to New York.
We once had a national assault weapons ban. It worked.
Republicans in Congress must find the courage to pass it again.
“Our laws only go so far,” she said. “Congress must summon the courage to stand up to the gun lobby and finally pass a national assault weapons ban.”
The shooter, a Las Vegas resident, reportedly drove across the country over three days before carrying out the attack. Hochul paid tribute to Officer Islam and other victims, saying, “My heart is with his loved ones, his NYPD family, and every victim of this tragedy.”
