OpenAI And Anthropic Narrow Gap With Big Tech Lobbyists

Anthropic spent $1.97 million, surpassing Nvidia's lobbying total, while OpenAI spent $1.2 million, nearly matching Nvidia's expenditure

OpenAI and Anthropic significantly increased their federal lobbying spending during the second quarter of 2026 as the artificial intelligence industry expanded its presence in Washington ahead of the midterm elections and expected public offerings, according to CNBC.

Together, the two companies spent $3.17 million, up 23% from the previous quarter, lobbying on issues including cybersecurity, copyright, cloud computing and defense procurement.

The report said Anthropic spent $1.97 million, surpassing Nvidia's lobbying total, while OpenAI spent $1.2 million, nearly matching Nvidia's expenditure. Both companies also more than doubled their spending compared with the same period last year.

According to CNBC, lobbying by major technology companies remained largely stable overall, with Meta remaining the biggest spender despite reducing its outlay. Google and Microsoft increased their lobbying budgets during the quarter.

The report also said major U.S. defense contractors collectively reduced lobbying expenditures, highlighting a shift as AI companies take a more prominent role in shaping federal technology and regulatory policy.
