OpenAI is expanding ChatGPT advertising to 26 additional countries, bringing the service’s global reach to 89 markets as the company seeks to diversify revenue beyond subscriptions and enterprise contracts.

The rollout will introduce ads to free users and Go subscribers in countries including Argentina, Nigeria, South Africa, Peru and Ukraine. OpenAI said advertisements will be clearly labelled, remain separate from chatbot responses and will not influence the answers users receive.

The company’s advertising business reached a $1 billion annualised revenue run rate in August, up from $100 million in March, CNBC previously reported. OpenAI also said more than 100,000 advertisers have run campaigns on the platform.

The expansion comes as OpenAI and rival Anthropic prepare for potential public listings. OpenAI executives have indicated that a 2027 listing is under consideration, although no date has been announced.

The company plans to develop additional ad formats, measurement tools and purchasing options to attract more businesses.
