OpenAI Chief Scientist Jakub Pachocki has warned that rapid advances in artificial intelligence could soon lead to systems capable of contributing significantly to their own development.
In an essay, Pachocki said the pace of progress raises serious concerns because researchers still cannot fully understand how increasingly capable models behave or reliably ensure their alignment with human values.
According to Pachocki, AI systems are becoming more capable across research, cybersecurity and computer operation, creating both major opportunities and new risks.
Pachocki argued that AI development should be constrained by confidence in safety rather than pursued at maximum speed. He called for stronger safety standards, independent oversight and international coordination.
The OpenAI scientist also said voluntary slowdowns may be necessary until effective safeguards are established, warning that humanity must retain control as AI becomes increasingly autonomous.
