Vice President JD Vance has blamed the Iran war for Republican losses in the 2026 midterm elections, arguing that the conflict cost the party control of Congress.
Vance urged Republicans to end the war, tackle inflation, prioritise domestic interests and reconsider the US relationship with Israel. His remarks received public support from the president's son, who endorsed his assessment on social media.
President Donald Trump also acknowledged in a Fox News interview that rising gasoline prices linked to the conflict had damaged Republican election prospects, despite previously describing the war as a short-term challenge with long-term benefits.
Meanwhile, Secretary of State Marco Rubio urged patience, arguing that the Iran conflict should not be compared with prolonged US military engagements in Iraq and Afghanistan.
