The Vatican has declared the Society of Saint Pius X (SSPX) to be in schism and excommunicated its bishops, priests and members who formally support the group after it ordained four bishops without papal approval, reported by CNN.

According to the Vatican, the ordinations went ahead despite repeated warnings from Pope Leo XIV, who described the move as a grave act of disobedience.

The decree excommunicates the four newly ordained bishops and the two bishops who conducted the ceremony. It also warns that clergy and laypeople who formally join the group will face the same penalty.

The report said the ruling is broader than the Vatican's action against the group in 1988. It also declares marriages and confessions performed by SSPX clergy invalid.

The SSPX rejects key reforms introduced by the Second Vatican Council, including changes to Catholic worship and teachings on religious freedom. The Vatican said members willing to return remain welcome in full communion.
