Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, the first and only woman to hold the position in U.S. history, announced Thursday she will not seek reelection after nearly four decades in Congress.
In a farewell video message to her San Francisco constituents, the 85-year-old Democrat reflected on her career, calling it “the greatest honor” of her life.

Pelosi’s announcement follows her recent success helping pass California’s Proposition 50, a redistricting measure favoring Democrats ahead of the 2026 midterms.
Elected in 1987, Pelosi rose to national prominence as a formidable political strategist and chief architect of the Affordable Care Act. She clashed frequently with President Donald Trump, notably overseeing his two impeachments.
Rep. Nancy Pelosi, who made history as the nation’s first female speaker of the House and twice served in that top job, will not seek re-election to Congress in 2026.

Her departure marks the end of an era for Democrats, closing the career of one of the most influential—and polarizing—figures in modern American politics. Pelosi vowed to continue serving San Francisco through her final year in office.
