Pentagon Faces Leadership Shake-Up As Iran War Strains Forces

Pentagon turmoil has intensified as Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth continues reshaping the department amid the Iran war, according to Axios.

Army Secretary Dan Driscoll resigned after reported clashes with Hegseth, leaving the Army without Senate-confirmed civilian or uniformed leadership.

The Washington Post has counted more than two dozen senior officers dismissed under Hegseth, while The New York Times reported that he removed at least 45 officers from promotion lists this year. NBC News also reported that additional promotions were blocked.

The strain extends beyond personnel. The Post reported that top regional commanders objected to extending forces for Iran, citing risks to other missions. The Navy has faced readiness concerns, while AP reported that the war has consumed 65% of the U.S. Patriot interceptor inventory.

Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell rejected claims of disarray and shortages, calling reports false or misleading. Yet Axios says public access has declined, with no briefing since May 5.
