The U.S. Defense Department has signed a framework agreement with Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman to significantly expand production of Patriot PAC-3 and THAAD missile interceptor systems.
According to the Pentagon, the initiative is intended to strengthen missile defense capabilities amid ongoing conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine.
According to Defense Department officials, the agreement will triple Patriot production capacity and quadruple output for THAAD interceptors.
Undersecretary Michael P. Duffey said stronger supply chains are essential to expanding U.S. defense manufacturing.
The announcement was welcomed by investors, with shares of Northrop Grumman and Lockheed Martin rising in early trading.
Northrop executive Ben Davies said long-term investments have positioned the company to rapidly increase production when needed.
