The number of undocumented immigrants in the United States hit a record 14 million in 2023, a 19% increase from the year before, according to Pew Research Center.

The surge was fueled largely by policies under the Biden administration that granted deportation protections to asylum seekers and migrants released at the border. Pew estimated that this group made up more than 40% of the total undocumented population.

Since taking office in January, President Donald Trump has intensified enforcement efforts, suspending temporary protections for nationals from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela. Pew suggested that the undocumented population has likely declined in 2025 as deportations increase.

Unauthorized immigrants represented 4.1% of the U.S. population in 2023, with most concentrated in six states: California, Texas, Florida, New York, New Jersey, and Illinois. Significant increases came from Venezuela and Cuba, Pew reported.
