Samuel Bateman, the leader of a polygamous religious sect who is already serving a 50-year federal prison sentence, has been convicted on three state child abuse charges in Arizona following a jury trial.

The case stemmed from an incident in 2022 when a passerby reported seeing small fingers protruding through gaps in the doors of a trailer traveling near Flagstaff.

Police stopped the vehicle and discovered three girls, aged 11 to 14, confined inside. Prosecutors argued that the children had been placed in conditions that endangered their health and safety.

After approximately 40 minutes of deliberation, the jury found Bateman guilty on all three counts of child abuse.

💡
The convictions add to Bateman's existing federal sentence, which was imposed in a separate case involving crimes connected to his leadership of the sect.

The prosecution described the verdict as an important step toward accountability for the abuse of vulnerable children. Bateman now faces sentencing on the state convictions, which could result in additional prison time beyond his current federal sentence.
