Fed Chair Jerome Powell

Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said Wednesday he’s not thinking about his future at the central bank, brushing off questions about whether he’d remain as a governor if not reappointed.

“I’m not thinking about that,” Powell told a reporter. “I’m thinking about this.”

His comments came hours after President Donald Trump joked about appointing himself to lead the Fed, expressing continued dissatisfaction with Powell’s leadership. “Maybe I should go to the Fed. Am I allowed to appoint myself?” Trump said. “I’d do a much better job than these people.”

Trump has repeatedly criticized Powell, calling him “stupid” and a “major loser,” and has blamed him for delaying interest rate cuts. Though Trump has ruled out firing Powell before his term ends next year, he has made clear he will not keep him on as Fed chair.

Powell’s current term as chair ends in May 2026, but his term as a Fed governor extends until 2028.
