Novaya Gazeta, widely regarded as Russia’s last major independent newspaper, has announced it will cease operations from November 9, citing pressure from government authorities and security agencies.

Editor-in-chief Sergei Sokolov said the newsroom had been forced to shut down after losing access to its Moscow office and its donation system, which provided its remaining funding. The Anna Politkovskaya Museum, housed in the former office of the journalist murdered in 2006, will also close.

Founded in 1993 with financial support from former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, the newspaper built a reputation for investigative reporting on corruption and human rights abuses. Its former editor, Dmitry Muratov, received the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize.

The publication suspended operations after Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022 and subsequently lost its media licence. Its closure leaves no major independent newspapers operating inside Russia, amid a broader crackdown on critical media.
