The U.S. Coast Guard is tracking a Russian military intelligence ship operating unusually close to Hawaii. The vessel, identified as the Kareliya, was detected roughly 15 nautical miles south of Oahu on Oct. 29.
Coast Guard aircraft and a cutter monitored the ship through flyovers and close transits, calling the response part of routine maritime security and homeland defense operations.

International law permits foreign military ships to operate outside the 12-mile territorial limit, but U.S. officials view the activity as part of a pattern of Russian intelligence gathering near American waters.
The Kareliya, a Soviet-era Vishnya-class spy ship, has been spotted near Hawaii multiple times, including in 2021 and 2023.

Allied nations are seeing similar activity. The U.K. recently tracked a Russian vessel mapping underwater infrastructure, while NORAD has documented unsafe encounters with Russian jets near Alaska.
U.S. officials say they will continue monitoring Russian movements closely.
