Sam Altman Warns AI Could Become Too Powerful To Control

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is backing calls for a more cautious pace of artificial intelligence development, warning that unchecked progress could create serious risks.

Altman said AI could go “very badly” if humanity loses control of its future or if too much power becomes concentrated in one person or company. He supports a federal framework for frontier AI and independent evaluators with access to advanced models.

President Donald Trump rejected calls for a slowdown, arguing it could weaken America’s competitive position against China.

According to the report, cooperation with China could prove especially difficult because of the military and economic incentives to gain an AI advantage. Chinese officials have dismissed the warnings as fear mongering.
