Sen. Bernie Sanders is calling on leading artificial intelligence companies to pause development, warning that Congress could intervene if the industry fails to address growing safety concerns.
According to Axios, he cited recent incidents involving potentially dangerous biological research and AI models displaying unexpected behavior.
Sanders said the companies had previously indicated they would slow or halt development if their systems became too risky. He urged the executives to honor those commitments and warned that lawmakers could take action if they do not.
The push comes amid increasing concern over rapid AI advances. The report said more than 1,200 employees at major AI companies are supporting international efforts to slow development, while OpenAI recently delayed the release of its latest model.
For now, Sanders' effort is likely to focus on public pressure and legislative proposals.
