Saudi Aramco has temporarily shut down its Ras Tanura oil refinery near Dammam after it was targeted by Iranian drones, according to Saudi state television. Officials said the closure was precautionary and that no casualties were reported following a fire at the site.

Saudi Arabia’s defense ministry said incoming aerial threats were intercepted. Ras Tanura is one of the kingdom’s most critical energy facilities, with the capacity to process more than 500,000 barrels of crude oil per day. Sources include Saudi state media and the Saudi defense ministry.

The strike marks a sharp escalation in the widening Middle East conflict. Iran has also threatened shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for global oil trade, where several vessels have already come under attack.

“This puts Gulf energy infrastructure directly in Iran’s sights,” said Torbjorn Soltvedt of Verisk Maplecroft, warning of prolonged economic and security risks for US allies.
