Todd Blanche has been sworn in as U.S. Attorney General after winning Senate confirmation by a narrow 50-49 vote.

According to the report, the vote ended a prolonged dispute between Senate Republicans and the Trump administration over President Donald Trump's former personal lawyer.

Blanche's background as a defense attorney drew opposition, along with a proposed $1.8 billion fund intended to compensate people described as victims of government persecution. Critics argued the proposal could benefit individuals prosecuted over the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot.

Republican Sens. Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski voted against confirmation.

Justice Department officials said the controversial fund had been rescinded, but Democrats questioned whether written agreements with Sen. John Cornyn permanently prevent its revival.

Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer sharply criticized Blanche's confirmation as the new attorney general faces scrutiny over the department's recent legal setbacks.
