Senate Hearing Revives Fauci-Paul Clash Over COVID Origins

Wednesday's Senate hearing is expected to renew the long-running confrontation between former top U.S. infectious disease official Dr. Anthony Fauci and Sen. Rand Paul over COVID-19's origins and gain-of-function research, according to CBS News.

The report said Paul has repeatedly argued that the coronavirus likely leaked from a laboratory in Wuhan, China, and has accused Fauci of downplaying that possibility during the pandemic.

Fauci has consistently maintained that he remained open to multiple theories while saying available evidence often pointed toward a natural origin.

According to CBS News, the two have also clashed over whether the National Institutes of Health funded gain-of-function research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology.

Paul has accused Fauci of misleading Congress, while Fauci has denied the allegation, arguing the research cited did not meet the federal definition of gain-of-function studies.

The report said recently released diary entries show Fauci privately accused Paul of promoting conspiracy theories linking him to the virus.
