Former top U.S. infectious disease official Dr. Anthony Fauci is scheduled to testify before the Senate Homeland Security Committee on Wednesday, setting up a closely watched hearing chaired by Sen. Rand Paul, according to CBS News.

The report said Fauci's appearance comes days after Paul's office released diary entries written during Fauci's role in the Trump and Biden administrations' response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The journals reportedly describe early discussions about the origins of the coronavirus, an issue that has remained politically and scientifically contested.

According to CBS News, the hearing is expected to revisit competing theories that COVID-19 emerged either through natural animal transmission or an accidental laboratory leak in Wuhan, China.

The report said previous assessments by the World Health Organization and the U.S. intelligence community reached differing conclusions and did not establish a definitive origin.

Lawmakers are also expected to examine the debate over gain-of-function research and allegations surrounding U.S.-funded virus research conducted in Wuhan.
