Democratic Senator Chris Murphy said Tuesday that the Pentagon denied him access to Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, arguing that the decision prevents Congress and the public from seeing the costs of the ongoing war.

Murphy said the base has become a focal point of regional hostilities following repeated Iranian attacks since the conflict began in February. He made the comments in Riyadh during a Middle East trip that included meetings with Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio facilitated Murphy’s visit to the region and diplomatic meetings, while the senator said the Pentagon separately blocked his request to visit the base. Murphy described the denial as part of what he called a “deliberate campaign of obfuscation.”

The Pentagon did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Murphy urged Republican lawmakers to seek greater transparency about the conflict and its costs.
