Serbian leader Aleksandar Vucic conceded defeat on Sunday after a parliamentary election handed victory to the student-backed Students’ List, marking a major political shift following two years of anti-government protests.

Vucic said his Serbian Progressive Party expected roughly 105 seats in the 250-member Parliament, compared with an estimated 135 to 140 for its opponents. He blamed independent media and alleged foreign interference for the result.

The student-led movement gained momentum after 16 people died in a 2024 train station canopy collapse in Novi Sad. Protesters accused officials of corruption and cronyism linked to renovation work.

The movement campaigned on restoring democracy and improving the economy, attracting voters beyond traditional opposition strongholds.

Supporters celebrated across Belgrade after the announcement. However, independent monitors reported alleged electoral irregularities, including possible voter intimidation and attempted vote-buying. The European Union closely watched the election because Serbia is a candidate for membership.

The result challenges a political establishment Vucic’s party has dominated for 14 years.
