A lifeguard at Scarborough Beach State Park in Maine was pulled underwater Saturday after a white shark grabbed his rescue torpedo.
According to the report, the lifeguard escaped without injuries but was shaken by the encounter.
The incident comes after a series of shark sightings along the Scarborough coastline. Officials have recently observed nearly a dozen juvenile sharks near Pine Point Beach, while experts say the number of sharks remaining close to shore has increased.
Scarborough authorities are using drones to monitor the coastline and track shark activity near popular swimming areas. Beach officials are urging swimmers to remain alert, stay close to shore and leave the water immediately if a shark is spotted.
Shark activity in the region generally increases between July and September, but officials are warning that sightings can occur even in relatively shallow waters.
