SoftBank reported stronger-than-expected fiscal first-quarter earnings, helped by a sharp rise in the value of its Intel investment and gains from ByteDance, according to the company's quarterly results.

Net profit for the June quarter reached 347.3 billion yen ($2.2 billion), surpassing analysts' expectations despite declining nearly 18% from a year earlier.

The report said SoftBank recorded a 1.3 trillion yen gain on its Intel stake after the U.S. chipmaker's shares surged over the past year. Its Vision Fund also posted a modest profit, largely driven by a $2.2 billion increase in the value of ByteDance, offsetting declines in other investments.

Unlike the previous quarter, SoftBank reported no gain or loss from its OpenAI investment, despite committing more than $60 billion to the artificial intelligence company.

The firm's AI computing business posted wider losses due to higher research and development spending, while investors continued to scrutinize SoftBank's heavy AI investments and funding strategy.
