Spain has accused Argentine President Javier Milei of interfering in its domestic politics after he attacked Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and urged voters to remove his socialist government.

Speaking in Madrid on Wednesday, Milei called Sanchez a “dictator” and described Spain as suffering under socialism. He encouraged voters to reject the ruling socialists ahead of the November 29 general election.

Spain’s Foreign Ministry condemned the remarks as insults against the country, its elected institutions and its population. The government described Milei’s visit as an attempt to deepen political polarization.

Sanchez called the snap election after parliament rejected housing reforms introduced amid nationwide protests over affordability and evictions. Polls suggest a potential coalition between the conservative People’s Party and right-wing Vox could defeat his party.

The dispute revives tensions between Madrid and Buenos Aires, whose diplomatic relations deteriorated in 2024 after Milei attacked Sanchez’s wife. Milei is also an ally of US President Donald Trump.
