Following the denial, Chipotle shares fell more than 2% in premarket trading Monday, while Starbucks stock gained over 1%. Earlier speculation had pushed Chipotle shares higher and weighed on Starbucks.

Starbucks CEO Brian Niccol, who previously led Chipotle until late 2024, is overseeing a turnaround effort at the coffee chain. Investors had reportedly expressed concern that a major acquisition could distract from those plans.

Chipotle faces its own challenges, with shares down about 20% over the past year as the company works to address slowing customer traffic. With the takeover prospect dismissed, both companies are expected to remain focused on their respective business strategies.
