Clean technology startup Fluxnium is developing a method to extract uranium from seawater, potentially opening access to an enormous resource estimated to contain enough uranium to fuel nuclear power for tens of thousands of years.
The company uses specially designed polymer fibers that attract dissolved uranium. The fibers are suspended from buoys offshore for 30 to 60 days before being brought ashore, where the uranium is extracted and processed into yellowcake.
Fluxnium says the fibers can be reused several times and that the process does not produce toxic mining tailings.
The startup recently raised $7 million in seed funding led by Congruent Ventures, with participation from Active Impact Investments and Constellation Energy.
Fluxnium is developing the technology as the U.S. nuclear industry expands and concerns grow over uranium supply and geopolitical dependence.
