Why Has The TIPP Morals And Ethics Index Been Falling Steadily For Nearly Two Decades?
We'd like to hear your thoughts on why our morals and ethics index has been steadily declining. After we've gathered enough information, we'll evaluate and present the findings.
Morals And Ethics Index
Our morals and ethics index is the most pessimistic metric among the seven indexes we track. We compute the index based on response to the question, "Generally speaking, how satisfied are you with the direction that the country is going in at this time in terms of morals and ethics?"
The index ranges from 0 to 100. An index of 50 or above is positive, below 50 is negative, and 50 is neutral. We show the average for each of the past twenty years.
- For the past two decades, the average has been 35.3. Only five of the 240 months (2%) saw the index rise above 50, indicating a positive reading.
- In the aftermath of 9/11, October 2001 saw an all-time high of 57.0, and October 2017 saw an all-time low of 24.4.
- Over the last two decades, the index has been steadily declining.
