Sudan’s army has retaken the presidential palace in Khartoum, and appears poised to regain control of the capital two years after it was kicked out by the rival paramilitary Rapid Support Forces.

The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia, led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, known as Hemedti, quickly took the palace and most of the capital at the outbreak of war in April 2023, but the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan have in recent months staged a comeback.
The army seized control of the palace on Friday morning but did not take over the entire city, while RSF fighters continue to hold areas in the south and east, according to army spokesman Hassan Ibrahim.
Reclaiming Khartoum would be a huge victory for the army and a pivotal moment in the conflict.
Nearly two years of war has killed tens of thousands, displaced over 12 million and triggered the world’s largest displacement crisis.
