The U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday ruled 6-3 in favor of the Trump administration, allowing it to move forward with ending Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for approximately 350,000 Haitians and 6,000 Syrians living in the United States.
The decision lifted lower court injunctions that had temporarily blocked the policy while legal challenges continued.
Writing for the majority, Justice Samuel Alito said the statute gives the administration discretion to determine whether TPS should continue.
In dissent, Justice Elena Kagan argued that the administration failed to complete the consultations required before ending the protections.
The cases will now return to lower courts, while the administration prepares to review TPS renewals for other countries, including Ukraine, in the coming months.
