Sweden accuses Russia of being behind a significant rise in GPS signal jamming over the Baltic Sea, raising concerns for aviation in the region. Moscow denies the allegations.

The Swedish Transport Agency (STA) reported that interference has escalated from occasional incidents to an almost daily occurrence. Authorities have logged 733 cases so far in 2025, compared with just 55 during the whole of 2023.

The warning comes days after a plane carrying European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen experienced GPS interference over Bulgaria in a suspected Russian operation on August 31. The aircraft landed safely at Plovdiv Airport, reportedly relying on paper maps after its navigation systems were compromised.
