China is closely watching Japan after Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi secured a landslide election victory, raising concerns in Beijing over possible changes to Japan’s pacifist constitution. Chinese officials fear revisions to Article 9, which renounces the use of force, could destabilize the region.
Takaichi has previously expressed support for revising the postwar clause and now holds a powerful mandate, with her Liberal Democratic Party and allies controlling more than two-thirds of the lower house.
She has said Japan will act calmly in its national interest while pursuing key policy shifts, according to Bloomberg.

Chinese officials warned Tokyo against abandoning its peaceful path. Analysts in China argue constitutional revision would mark a shift toward militarization and prompt political and economic retaliation.
Still, major hurdles remain. Any constitutional change would require upper house approval and a public referendum. Tensions remain high over Taiwan, where China has vowed not to compromise.
