Tech Giants Oppose Restrictions On Open-Weight AI

Nvidia, Microsoft, Meta, Palantir and more than 20 technology companies have urged policymakers to avoid imposing early restrictions on open-weight artificial intelligence models, warning such measures could weaken competition and push innovation overseas, according to CNBC.

The companies argued in a joint letter that open-weight models, which users can download, modify and operate on their own systems, encourage broader access to AI and reduce dependence on a handful of proprietary platforms.

According to CNBC, the companies acknowledged concerns over intellectual property theft and unlawful AI distillation but argued those issues should be addressed through targeted legal and commercial measures instead of broad regulatory bans.

The report noted that OpenAI and Anthropic did not sign the letter, although OpenAI President Greg Brockman separately said he supports expanding public access to AI technologies rather than limiting their availability.
