Authorities have reduced the evacuation zone following a chemical tank leak at MC Tank Terminal in northeast Ohio, as conditions improve. Seven people remained hospitalized Thursday, while 57 had received hospital treatment since the rupture began Tuesday.

MC Tank Transport identified the leaking substance as glycidyl methacrylate, an industrial chemical used in manufacturing certain plastics, paints and coatings. City leaders authorized controlled venting to prevent a potential explosion.

Officials reduced the evacuation perimeter from a half-mile to a quarter-mile after lifting a shelter-in-place order Wednesday evening, allowing residents outside the smaller zone to return home.

The Toledo-Lucas County Health Department issued re-entry guidance covering ventilation, food, clothing and pets. The city also pledged to clean outdoor playgrounds within the affected area.

As tank pressure and temperature continue to decline, Ohio State University Extension advised residents to discard outdoor crops within a three-mile radius. Crews are preparing to transfer site control back to the facility’s owner.
