The Trump administration has banned Chinese artificial intelligence startup DeepSeek from civilian federal government systems, citing cybersecurity vulnerabilities and concerns about sensitive data reaching Chinese authorities, according to CNBC.
The Department of Homeland Security published an order requiring civilian agencies to remove DeepSeek technology from their IT systems and prohibiting purchases of its products and services. The restrictions also cover third-party tools built using DeepSeek technology. The Defense Department is excluded from this particular order.
The move comes amid intensifying US-China competition over artificial intelligence. China’s Foreign Ministry criticised what it described as the politicisation of technology and trade, Reuters reported.
Restrictions on DeepSeek already existed across several US government bodies. Agencies can seek exemptions by submitting written justifications to Homeland Security within 60 days of the order’s issuance.
