The Trump administration is preparing to revoke the visas of potentially hundreds of thousands of foreigners who entered the United States on temporary visas before seeking asylum.
According to CNN, the measure could affect as many as 200,000 people, although officials said the revocations will occur gradually rather than all at once.
State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott said the department is working with the Department of Homeland Security to identify visa holders who entered as temporary visitors but later sought to remain permanently through asylum.
The report said the move is part of President Donald Trump’s broader immigration crackdown. The State Department has already revoked more than 175,000 visas since Trump began his second term.
Asylum is available to people in the U.S. who fear persecution based on factors including politics, race or religion in their home countries.
