Trump Administration Flags AI Firm Anthropic As Security Risk

The Trump administration has formally labeled artificial intelligence company Anthropic a supply chain risk, escalating a dispute over the military use of advanced AI tools.

The Pentagon announced Thursday that Anthropic and its AI products, including the chatbot Claude, are considered a security risk “effective immediately,” according to the Associated Press.

The move could force defense contractors to stop using Anthropic’s technology. Officials said the decision was driven by concerns that the company tried to limit how the U.S. military could deploy AI tools during wartime.

President Donald Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth previously warned Anthropic after CEO Dario Amodei raised objections about potential uses of AI for domestic surveillance and autonomous weapons.

The Pentagon said the military must retain the ability to use technology for all lawful purposes and cannot allow private companies to interfere with command decisions.

Anthropic has said it plans to challenge the designation in court, calling the action legally unsound, according to the Associated Press.
