The Trump administration imposed sanctions on the International Criminal Court on Friday, banning certain transactions and threatening penalties for companies that provide services to the tribunal.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the measures were intended to prevent the court from prosecuting Americans and urged U.S. allies to take action against the institution. The ICC has 125 member countries.
Court officials have been shifting banking and computer systems to prepare for the sanctions and limit disruptions to its operations.
The announcement came hours after South African jurist Navi Pillay, who served on the ICC’s Appeals Chamber from 2003 to 2008, received the Nobel Peace Prize, according to the supplied report. The sanctions add to tensions between Washington and the court over its authority and investigations.
