Construction on President Donald Trump’s proposed 250-foot triumphal arch in Washington could begin as early as November 5, according to a Justice Department court filing reported by CNN.

The National Capital Planning Commission is scheduled to consider final plans that day. Construction would also require authorisation from the Interior Department. The filing was submitted as part of a lawsuit seeking to block the project.

Plans released last week describe the structure as a ceremonial gateway but omit military features Trump previously said it would contain, including drones, ammunition and positions for snipers. However, the administration has not ruled out incorporating those elements.

The arch would stand opposite Arlington National Cemetery, where nearly 430,000 service members, veterans and relatives are buried. Veterans challenging the project argue it could undermine the dignity of funeral ceremonies, while preservationists warn it would obstruct views of historic landmarks.

The Interior Department says the structure would improve visitors’ experience.
