President Donald Trump announced Monday that the Philippines will face a 19% tariff on certain goods under a newly finalized trade deal, following President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s visit to the White House.

“It was a beautiful visit,” Trump posted on Truth Social, touting the agreement as an “open market” breakthrough with “ZERO Tariffs.” Yet, in the same statement, he added: “The Philippines will pay a 19% Tariff,” raising questions about the scope of the tariff exemptions.

Trump praised Marcos as “a very good, and tough, negotiator,” and highlighted enhanced military cooperation between the two nations.

The mixed messaging on tariff terms has left observers unclear whether the 19% applies to specific sectors or is a phased provision within the broader agreement.

The White House has not released further details on the trade framework or its strategic components.
