The Trump administration has approved a plan to execute former Army Maj. Nidal Hasan by firing squad for the 2009 Fort Hood shooting that killed 13 people, according to Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth recommended the execution method, which President Donald Trump approved. The Army secretary will determine the date and location, CBS News reported.

Hasan, a former Army psychiatrist, was convicted at a 2013 court-martial of murdering 13 people and injuring more than 30 others. He acknowledged carrying out the attack and said he acted to protect Islamic insurgents from US forces. He was sentenced to death.

The execution could become the first of an American service member since 1961. It would also represent a rare use of a firing squad, a method recently used in South Carolina.

Hasan pursued several appeals, including a Supreme Court challenge over courtroom access. The court declined to hear the case last year.
