President Donald Trump said Tuesday that the United States would refer to artificial intelligence as “super intelligence” in government documents, making the announcement during his address to the United Nations General Assembly.
Trump argued that the word “artificial” makes the technology sound less significant and said he hoped other countries would adopt the terminology.
Trump also rejected efforts to create a global framework for controlling or overseeing AI, arguing that international restrictions could hinder technological development. His comments came as a group of countries at the United Nations backed stronger international standards and human oversight for the technology.
He also pointed to the Department of Justice and other law-enforcement agencies as mechanisms that could intervene when necessary.
Trump's remarks come amid an expanding global debate over AI safety, regulation and competition between the United States and China.
His administration's approach emphasizes technological development and U.S. leadership, while other governments are advocating common international safeguards.
