President Donald Trump is likely to select Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton for a newly proposed White House artificial intelligence czar position, according to sources. Trump said Tuesday that he expected to make a decision within three or four days.

Trump discussed the potential appointment after meeting with technology executives at the White House, where participants addressed industry self-regulation and a proposed “AI Force” to oversee rapidly developing technology.

Clayton, who currently oversees 18 intelligence agencies, has argued against pausing U.S. AI development, saying that slowing innovation could allow other countries to advance their own models.

Clayton did not confirm whether he would accept the proposed role but defended voluntary industry oversight amid criticism from Sen. Elizabeth Warren.

The administration has also issued an executive order directing federal agencies to use the term “Super Intelligence” instead of AI and requiring officials to propose legislative definitions for the technology within 60 days.
