President Donald Trump is continuing to support the rapid expansion of AI data centers despite growing opposition that is emerging as a political issue ahead of the midterm elections.

Trump said Wednesday that the industry needs better public relations while arguing that data centers bring jobs and tax revenue to communities.

Opposition has grown over concerns about higher electricity bills, environmental pollution and pressure on local infrastructure. A March Gallup survey found that about seven in 10 Americans opposed building data centers in their communities.

The backlash has also become a campaign issue, with Republican and Democratic candidates attacking opponents over their positions on data center projects. A leaked Republican memo warned that public opposition could threaten GOP candidates in competitive races.

Industry leaders argue that blocking projects would shift their locations rather than reduce demand for computing infrastructure. Meta has also announced a $1 billion fund aimed at supporting communities hosting data centers.
