President Donald Trump said future promotional television ads will be funded through MAGA Inc. rather than taxpayer money, following criticism over a multimillion-dollar government advertising campaign, according to CNN.
Ad-tracking firm AdImpact estimated that at least $10.1 million in taxpayer funds had been spent as of Monday. The administration had originally allocated $20 million for the effort, although it remains unclear whether the full amount will be used. The White House confirmed Trump will not reimburse money already spent.
CNN reported that at least 13 campaign-style ads had been produced, featuring Trump, military imagery and favorable commentary.
Watchdog groups have argued that the spending may violate appropriations restrictions on propaganda or partisan communications. Congress did not block the campaign before the midterm elections.
