President Donald Trump on Tuesday warned that Indian goods could face tariffs as high as 25% if a long-pending trade deal remains unresolved. “They are going to pay 25%,” Trump told reporters when asked about potential duties on Indian imports. “India has been — they’re my friends,” he added.
U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said talks with India remain ongoing but emphasized that more discussions are needed. “We need some more negotiations on that with our Indian friends,” Greer told CNBC.
Trump has long criticized India’s high tariffs and restrictive trade practices. He paused proposed tariffs of 26% in April, but they remain on the table.
Last year, the U.S. imported $87 billion in goods from India, including pharmaceuticals and electronics. In return, India bought $42 billion in American products.
India’s Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar recently downplayed claims of a near-final deal, calling negotiations “complicated” and “intricate.
