President Donald Trump gave Chinese President Xi Jinping a highly ceremonial welcome in Washington, but expectations for major breakthroughs remain limited, according to CNN.
Trump greeted Xi at Joint Base Andrews before the leaders walked together along a red carpet. The symbolism comes as Washington and Beijing confront disputes over trade, technology, rare earths and Taiwan.
AI could prove particularly difficult. Both countries view the technology as strategically important, while Trump has rejected broad international controls. China has also resisted outside restrictions, although Beijing has expressed interest in developing safeguards and mechanisms for cooperation.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the two countries were discussing communication channels for reporting serious AI incidents.
The summit also comes amid concerns over U.S. alliances and China’s growing economic leverage, including its dominance of rare earth supply chains.
