President Donald Trump spoke by phone Sunday with Yemeni President Rashad Alimi as Iran-backed Houthi forces made territorial gains near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a strategically important waterway linking the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden.
Four sources familiar with the discussion said Alimi sought U.S. support for his Saudi-backed government, but Trump did not make a direct commitment of military assistance.
The call was described as an expression of support for Yemen’s government following recent Houthi advances along the Red Sea coast and surrounding areas.
Trump has also said the United States remains in contact with the Houthis, who have pledged not to attack Western commercial shipping.
The latest discussion comes as Washington weighs its response to the shifting balance of power around one of the world's key maritime trade routes. The White House and Yemen's information minister did not comment on the call.
