President Donald Trump has announced plans to provide $500 rebate checks to nearly 1 million Affordable Care Act enrollees across 30 states, with payments expected to begin in October.
The initiative would target people who purchase ACA coverage at full price without receiving federal premium tax credits.
The proposal comes as ACA premiums have increased sharply following the expiration of enhanced pandemic-era subsidies earlier this year. The administration has characterized the payments as compensation for what it calls excess charges.
Healthcare advocacy groups and political opponents have criticized the initiative as an election-year “gimmick,” arguing that a one-time $500 payment does little to offset broader increases in healthcare and insurance costs.
The plan would provide temporary financial relief to eligible enrollees but does not address the underlying factors driving higher ACA premiums.
