Trump Removes Venezuela From U.S. Drug Failure List

Colombia remains under the designation, with Washington citing record levels of coca cultivation and cocaine production under the previous government.

President Donald Trump has removed Venezuela from the U.S. list of countries that Washington says have failed to meet counternarcotics obligations, while keeping Colombia on the designation and leaving open the possibility of removing it next year.

The decision marks a change from last year, when Venezuela and Colombia were both designated as having failed demonstrably to meet U.S. drug-control expectations.

Trump attributed the change involving Venezuela to increased cooperation with its interim government following major political changes in the country. Venezuela, however, remains classified by the United States as a major drug transit or illicit drug-producing country.

Colombia remains under the designation, with Washington citing record levels of coca cultivation and cocaine production under the previous government.

Trump said the status could be reconsidered if President Abelardo De La Espriella’s government makes progress in coca eradication and dismantling drug-trafficking networks over the next year.

The decision comes as Washington seeks closer counternarcotics cooperation with governments across Latin America.
